Super Eagles legend, Emmanuel Amunike says ‘it’s a sad day for football’ following the passing away of the iconic Argentine Diego Maradona.
The former Barcelona winger played against arguably the greatest footballer of all-time during the US 94 World Cup and Nigeria lost to the genius of Maradona who inspired the South Americans to a 2-1 victory.
“It’s unfortunate that we’ve lost one of the greatest players ever to have played this game. We thank God for his life and everything he has done. This is someone that has put smiles on the face of millions of fans around the world.
“We thank him for what he has done during his playing days and when he was here with us. We pray his soul will be rested in the lord. It’s a very sad day for the football family,” Amunike was quoted as saying by SportingLife.
Maradona had only turned 60 on October 30 and was released from hospital a couple of weeks ago following brain surgery but gave up after he suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest on Wednesday morning.
