Samuel Chukwueze wins penalty as Villarreal held Real Madrid to a 1-1 scored draw in the La Liga encounter at Estadio de la Ceramica on Saturday night.

The champions were without captain Sergio Ramos and star striker Karim Benzema due to injury but were in front after just 107 seconds through Mariano Diaz, back in the line-up for the first time in 18 months.

The Real Madrid took the lead early on as Mariano headed in from Dani Carvajal’s cross. Villarreal played appealed for offside, but the decision stood and Real Madrid were 1-0 ahead.

The equaliser eventually came on 76 minutes as Gerard Moreno scored from the penalty spot after Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois had brought down Super Eagles winger Chukwueze.

Despite failing to hold onto their lead, Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane will have been happy with how his team controlled the first half and will go into Wednesday’s crunch Champions League Group B clash against Inter Milan with confidence.
