Still basking in the euphoria of his side 1-0 win over Nigeria on Friday night, Algeria manager, Djamel Belmadi admitted that he was stunned by Gernot Rohr’s tactical formation, which according to him almost derailed his game plan.
Nigeria was condemned to her first loss in six matches after an early goal from defender Bensebaini Rami secured the win for Algeria.
Coach Gernot Rohr made six changes from a side that defeated Lesotho in Maseru and the match also saw FC Midtjylland midfielder Frank Onyeka and Zaidu Sanusi of FC Porto made their Super Eagles debut.
But Belmadi admitted that he had to dig deeper into his technical books of tricks and come up with a solution when he saw Super Eagles line up.
“We had spotted two or three weaknesses that we can explore tactically with certain players not available. Nigeria actually played others so it disturbed some of the information I was able to give to the players a bit, but they have adapted to this situation before, ”said the national coach.
Djamel Belmadi added: “ We responded well against a team which is tactically in good shape. We gave a strong physical response with a lot of intensity in the midfield and in the pressing. These are things that we were able to work on. I think our players have been almost perfect against a strong team,” Belmadi told Dz foot after the match.
