Manchester United is on the verge of completing their first signing of the summer after Dutch international Donny van de Beek confirmed to his Ajax teammates that he is moving to Old Trafford, according to reports.
The 23-year-old midfielder has been a long-time target for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and the gaffer sees him as a strong part of his plans in midfield ahead of the 2020-21 season.
Interestingly, Real Madrid, Tottenham and Barcelona also wanted the Ajax midfielder, who scored 10 goals in 37 appearances for the Dutch Eredivisie side last season.
According to Spanish news outlet SPORT, van de Beek informed his Ajax team-mates of his move to Manchester United and will fly to England next week to complete the £45million deal plus add-ons.
Barcelona was also an option for the midfielder as new manager Ronald Koeman wanted his fellow countryman to join him at the Camp Nou this summer but the Catalan giants baulked at the £50million asking price for the midfielder.
Ajax boss Erik Ten Haag seems to confirm the move when he said just before the friendly against Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday: ‘There are indeed developments that prevent him from being in the selection. We are looking at how that will end.’
The current transfer window closes on October 5 but Ajax would like van de Beek’s future sorted by September 13 before they begin their league campaign against Sparta Rotterdam.
