Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could call back defender Chris Smalling into his squad next season on a condition.
Smalling could team up with the Old Trafford giants once again if the club failed to sign a centre defender in the transfer market this summer.
Smalling was sent on loan to AS Roma following the signing of Harry Maguire last summer and the Serie A team is keen on making the English defender move permanent.
Manchester United want £25m for the centre-back but Roma is reluctant to meet the asking price as they are only will to pay half of the asking price.
Solskjaer wants a centre back that is fast to partner Maguire at the heart of the defence, Smalling is fast an attribute the manager craves for but his defensive frailty is the issue why Victor Lindelof was favoured last summer.
Manchester United is also monitoring Bournemouth ace Nathan Ake and Villarreal Pau Torres who is also a target for Barcelona.
If Manchester United failed in the pursuit of their target they would re-call Smalling back to the team this summer ahead of next season football action.
