Barcelona hero Xaxi Hernandez has informed the Camp Nou directors of his interest in coaching the La Liga Champions.
The former midfielder once rejected the offer at the start of the season when he was contacted to replace Ernesto Valverde by Barcelona sporting director Eric Abidal, before the appointment of Quique Setien as Valverde’s successor.
Xavi refused to terminate his contract with Al-Saad to replace Stein and he made it clear that he would only take up the job at the end of the season.
The greatest wish I have now is to be Barcelona coach and make Barcelona successful,” Xavi told Jordi Evolve whilst taking part in an organised discussion about racism in football.
“Not just for me, but for those players and so that Barcelona succeeds.
“As a consequence, our technical staff are preparing a lot and we are very excited.”
He was linked with the top job after Ernesto Valverde left, but Quique Setien was the man who ended up in the dugout at the Camp Nou.
“They came to me in January,” Xavi added.
“We were talking, but I told them that the circumstances and timing weren’t right.”
Presidential elections are due to take place at Barcelona in 2021 and a change of personnel could be the exact sort of situation which would facilitate his return.
“It’s clear that after an election would be the perfect stage,” Xavi said.
“I’m a club person. And what I would like is to have all the conditions to come back at the exact moment to start a project from scratch.
“I have already said this many times, but I would like to be able to make football decisions at Barcelona.”
The former Barcelona captain made 505 LaLiga Santander appearances for the Catalan club and is currently in charge at Qatari side Al Sadd.
