Barcelona manager Quique Setien has urged his team to prove Lionel Messi’s comments wrong this season as he motivates his players to put in their best performance to claim the La Liga and the Champions League trophy.
The Barcelona captain made it clear earlier this season in an interview with Mundo Deportivo that Barcelona is not in a position to win the Champions League this year, but Setien disagrees with his captain.
“After seeing what I have seen in football, I think we can win the Champions League,” Setien explained.
“I don’t agree with Leo. We’ve seen how Atletico have eliminated Liverpool, how Tottenham reached the final last year… For me it’s more difficult to win LaLiga than the Champions League; the Champions League can be won by any of the eight teams that are there at the end.
“We have Leo, who is the best in the world, but in the Champions League, you can be unlucky, as happened against Liverpool, and you go out.”
Setien was appointed in the mid-season and he has gone top of the La Liga table with two points above arch-rivals Real Madrid on the log.
The former Real Betis manager is aiming to clinge the La Liga title and the Champions League at the end of the campaign.
