Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has reportedly taken a dig at Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger over the decision to sign Lyon forward Alexandre Lacazette.

The 26-year-old French international has now joined FA Cup winners Arsenal from Ligue 1 side Lyon in a club-record deal worth £52million.

A source close to Jose Mourinho and the Red Devils told the media that the Portuguese boss spent six months scouting the forward, but decided to drop interest in him for a number of reasons.

“Lacazette was followed because he was top scorer in French football but a lot of his goals were penalties (10 of his 27 goals last season came from the spot),” the source said, according to the Daily Express.

“In the end, he wasn’t considered because he has no stamina, no physical impact and isn’t a big game player.”

Mourinho drew up a list of strikers to replace Zlatan Ibrahimovic this summer, options that included Everton’s Lukaku, Real Madrid hitman Alvaro Morata, and Torino frontman Andrea Belotti.

But Lacazette was not listed as a viable candidate, with Mourinho eventually opting to sign Lukaku in a deal worth £75m with Wayne Rooney sign for Everton.

Lukaku hit 25 Premier League goals last season, three less than Lacazette in Ligue 1, but the feeling at Manchester United is that their new man was more impressive.

Mourinho and Wenger have endured a fractious relationship ever since the Portuguese boss arrives in English football with Chelsea in 2004.
