Copa del Rey last 16: Barca face Celta, Real get easy draw - FCNaija

Copa del Rey holders Barcelona have been drawn against Celta Vigo in the last 16 of the competition following Tuesday’s draw while the Spanish capital sides Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid will both face lower league opposition.

The first leg for the Catalans will be played at the Estadio Municipal de Balaídos in Vigo on Wednesday, January 3. The return leg at Camp Nou has been set for Wednesday, January 10. The Federation did not immediately announce the kickoff times.

Barca qualified for the last 16 after beating Murcia, 8–0 on aggregate, in the last 32. Celta qualified for the round of 16 by knocking out Eibar, 3–1 on aggregate. The last time Barcelona and Celta faced of in the Copa del Rey came in the 2000/01 semi-finals, which Celta won, 4–2 on aggregate. The second match, held on June 24, 2001, was Pep Guardiola's final game for FC Barcelona.

Real Madrid who face second-tier Numancia suffered a scare against second-tier Fuenlabrada after they were held to a 2-2 draw at the Bernabeu last month, with the return of Gareth Bale needed to spark a comeback to progress with a 4-2 aggregate win. Los Blancos have not won the competition since beating the holders in 2014, with a defeat by local rivals Atletico Madrid suffered at their Bernabeu home the season before.

Tuesday's draw also paired last season's semi-finalists Atletico Madrid with third-division Lleida. Meanwhile, Formentera, another third-tier club, will play last year's losing finalist, Alaves.
