Bayern Munich sign 2018 World Cup winner for club-record fee

Bayern Munich signed 2018 FIFA World Cup winner Lucas Hernandez for a club-record £68 millions from Atletico Madrid until June 2022.

The 23-year-old France left-back as penned a five-year contract and will join them from July 1 after completing his medical during the international break.

Hernandez transfer has smashed Bayern Munich previous highest fee paid 66m for fellow France international Corentin Tolisso two years ago and Atletico star is the second member of France’s World Cup-winning squad to join Bayern for next season following VfB Stuttgart fullback Benjamin Pavard

Speaking of the transfer the defender told Bayern’s official website: "This is a really important day in my footballing career.

"FC Bayern Munich is one of the best clubs in Europe and the world. I’m proud to be able to fight for all possible titles with Bayern.

"I’d like to thank Atletico, the management, the coaches, my teammates and the fans for 12 wonderful years. Atletico will always remain a part of me. Now I’m looking forward to taking the next step with FC Bayern.”

Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic said: "I am very happy that we have been able to sign one of the best defensive players in the world and world champion in Lucas Hernandez.

"Lucas will continue our tradition of outstanding French players and strengthen our team."

Hernandez broke through the youth ranks at Atletico Madrid in 2014 and went on to collect 110 appearances for the La Liga club, as well as 15 caps for his country.
