Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman is set to change Sergio Busquets role at the club ahead of the new season, according to report.
The midfielder has been one of the undisputed regulars in the team over the last decade, but his place is under scrutiny following the appointment of Koeman.
According to the report in Mundo Deportivo, Koeman had a chat session with Busquets and he made it clear that the Spanish midfielder will face huge competition for his place from Frenkie de Jong and new signing Miralem Pjanic.
The report in Sport claims that Busquets has been told that while he’s still wanted “he no longer has the privilege he is used to and is far from guaranteed to start all games.”
DeJong will be played in Busquets preferred position and the Dutch international will be the key player in the midfield under Ronald Koeman.
There have been suggestions already that De Jong could play as part of a double pivot system along with Pjanic or Busquets at the Camp Nou.
The former Juventus midfielder will miss the start of the season after testing positive for COVID-19, the midfielder arrival is delayed by 15 days, which implies that he would miss the first week of pre-season with his new club.
