Erstwhile Super Eagles goalkeeper, Dosu Joseph insists coach Gernot Rohr must-win AFCON 2022 trophy to etched his name in Nigeria history books.
In an exclusive telephone chat recently with FCNaija, the former Reggianna safe hand said the former Gabon and Burkina Faso gaffer must get his act right when the continent’s best teams meet in Cameroon to jostle for AFCON diadem.
He posited that the German-born tactician has been given enough time to prove himself after being offered a fresh contract recently. The Atalanta 96 gold medalist stressed that Clemence Westerhof and late Stephen Keshi AFCON triumph has set the tone for incoming Super Eagles’ managers and failure to equal their records would only be tantamount to failure.
” Westerhof came her and won the Nations Cup and later took us to the quarter-finals of the World Cup in 1994. Jo Bonfere may not be at the World Cup but he was in charge when Nigeria won gold at Atlanta 96 Olympics. These are the success stories of our past foreign managers.
“Late Stephen Keshi also qualified for 2014 World Cup in Brazil and later crashed out in the second round like Westerhof. But he also won the Nations Cup.
” Rohr has been here for three years or so and qualified for Russia 2018 World Cup and failed to get to the next round. He was at the last AFCON and won bronze. I think he needs to give us the AFCON to be regarded as one of the successful coaches Nigeria has hired.
” He need to equal the record of Westerhof and Keshi by winning the next Nations Cup in Cameroon,” he told FCNaija.
Rohr’ signed a contract extension last May that will see him finish his tenure as Super Eagles gaffer by two years.
The 63 years old manager was appointed on an initial two years contract in August 2016, taking over a team in turmoil following Sunday Oliseh’s tumultuous campaign.
Rohr’ subsequently masterminded qualifications to 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia with one game to spare after comfortably navigating a ‘Group of Death’s that paraded African soccer giants like Algeria, Cameroon and Zambia.
