Real Madrid claimed a 1-0 victory over Espanyol on Sunday evening at the RCDE Stadium thanks to a superb backheel from Karim Benzema to Casemiro who put the ball past Diego Lopez in the additional time in the first half.
Los Blancos have moved two points ahead of the Barcelona in the race to win the La Liga title.
Real Madrid fought hard in the opening 45 minutes against Espanyol as the home team nearly hold Los Blancos to a goalless first half but a magnificent backheel to Casemiro from Karim Benzema ensured Zinedine Zidane’s men had the lead in the additional time of the first half.
Real Madrid made continued to offer attacking threat but Espanyol remained defensively disciplined and with 10 minutes to go Espanyol decided to take more risk as the home team opened up a bit to get an equaliser.
Real Madrid kept the game under control to avoid late drama.
With the result, Los Blancos is now two points clear on top of the La Liga table following the 2-2 draw between Barcelona and Celta Vigo.
