Ex-Gunners and England ace Paul Merson have urged Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta to signed £50m rated ex-Chelsea star Nathan Ake.
The 24-year-old Netherlands international has emerged as one of Bournemouth’s most important players since arriving Dean Court from Stamford Bridge four years ago for a club-record £20million after he initially impressed on loan in Eddie Howe’s side.
Ake who has been linked with a move back to Chelsea in the January transfer window for £40million buy-back clause but the Frank Lampard team cool interest after scouting report raises concerns but the Dutchman continues to generate plenty of transfer talk despite not moving last month.
However, Tottenham Hotspurs are said to be mulling over a big-money bid in the summer but Gunners legend was asked which areas Mikel Arteta should be looking to strengthen ahead of the summer transfer window, Merson told Sky Sports via Metro.
“They need a centre half and a world-class holding midfielder. ‘I think Arsenal need to play with a back three. They’re not good enough as defenders to play as a four.
“Ake has pace and he’s played in England for a while, so if you brought him in for next season he’s not a player who will need time to get used to the league for six months.
“Arsenal need to hit the ground running [next season] and everybody needs to know their jobs in the team.’
Ake has taken in over 100 appearances for Bournemouth since first linking up with them on loan from Chelsea in the 2016-17 campaign but versatility star is tied to a contract at the Vitality Stadium through to the summer of 2022.
