Lyon host Juventus on Wednesday night in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 ties at Groupama Stadium on Wednesday night.
Despite going unbeaten in their last two matches, Rudi Garcia men head into the contest with the Italian giants sitting in the seventh position in Ligue 1, while Old Lady have been in scintillating form in this season’s premier European competition registered five wins and a draw from their six group fixtures.
The home side’s treatment room has been a busy place this season. Both Memphis Depay and Jeff Reine-Adelaide are expected to play no further part this season having both suffered ligament damage. Their defensive options are limited too, with Leo Dubois, Youssouff Kone and Oumar Solet all set to miss out through injury.
For the visitors, the weekend’s league victory over SPAL saw Giorgio Chiellini start for the first time since August but Maurizio Sarri is expected to be without Miralem Pjanic, Sami Khedira, Douglas Costa and Merih Demiral due to their respective injuries.
Head to Head
The two sides have met just four times previously, with all meetings coming in the last six years. Lyon are yet to record a win against Juventus, managing just one draw and three losses in their previous meetings but the home side can take solace from their latest meeting in 2016 though, Corentin Tolisso with a late strike to cancel out Gonzalo Higuain’s 13th-minute penalty.
Both sides come into the game in reasonably good shape with two wins and a draw from their previous three fixtures.Lyon, however, have endured a turbulent season in comparison to their Italian opponents, sitting a disappointing seventh in Ligue 1, a massive 28 points behind runaway leaders PSG but progress in the Champions League could be the only way to save their season.
It’s a different story for Juventus. Sarri’s men are sitting pretty at the top of Serie A, although they are being run close by Lazio and Inter but recent wobbles against Napoli and Verona appear to have been put behind them as they look to secure a record ninth Serie A title in a row.
Lyon possible starting lineup: Lopes; Tete, Andersen, Denayer, Marcal; Tousart, Mendes; Traore, Aouar, Terrier; Dembele
Juventus possible starting lineup: Szczesny; Danilo, Bonucci, Chiellini, Sandro; Ramsey, Bentancur, Matuidi; Cuadrado, Dybala, Ronaldo
Prediction: Lyon 1-2 Juventus
